Description:

Starting with an understanding of breastfeeding as the gold standard of infant feeding, the course will provide up-to-date information based on best-practice principles. We will incorporate discussion of major Canadian and International initiatives for the support and protection of breastfeeding, such as The Baby-Friendly Initiative, the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, and Health Canada's recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding for six months.

On completion of this course, participants will have a better understanding of the importance of breastfeeding, and have a sound footing in evidence-based management of breastfeeding challenges. We will identify the many social and economic pressures that threaten breastfeeding, and explore how best to support mothers and families as they consider their choices. Participants will learn and enhance skills that will help them to provide quality of care to breastfeeding mothers and babies.

This course is ideal for nurses (both hospital and community); doulas; prenatal educators; nutritionists; midwives; physicians; naturopaths, and; anyone working with breastfeeding families who would like to have a solid foundation in evidence-based breastfeeding and support practices.
