Description:

Welcome! The Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo offers unique undergraduate and graduate programs covering the study of literature, rhetoric, professional writing, and digital media. Our professors have national and international reputations in these areas, and we boast many awards for teaching.

Our programs provide the tools you need to develop your analytical and critical communication capacities, your understanding of digital media, your sensitivity to language and its uses, your practical writing abilities, and your love of literature. Our diverse faculty teach exciting courses ranging from Chaucer to global English literature, from information design to experimental digital media and cyberculture. The department has a graduate student society and an undergraduate student society.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
  • An Honours Bachelor's degree in English, or its equivalent, with an average of at least 78% in English courses, and at least 75% overall.
  • Those with Honours degrees not in English may apply to the program but may be required to take as many as 10 undergraduate courses in English to prepare them for graduate-level study in the discipline.
  • Additional courses will be chosen in consultation with the Graduate Officer and will generally correspond to the minor program in English. When applying for admission to the program, candidates may also be asked to submit a portfolio of undergraduate or professional writing.
  • A Statement of Interest, no more than 500 words, explaining your reasons for applying to the program.
