Description:

The mission of the program is to advance the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation by providing timely, individualized, comprehensive, and compassionate care in a culture of innovation, exploration, and collaboration with members of a multidisciplinary health care team. We aim to implement an evidence-based approach, generate new knowledge, disseminate and apply knowledge of best practice, and to enhance quality of life through maximizing independent function. The goal is to recruit the highest quality residents and faculty to fulfill our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based practice, to promote research in PM&R that creates new knowledge and enhances patient care, to continually refine our teaching curriculum for our residents and all other undergraduate and postgraduate learners, to promote and develop evidence-based practice based on clinical research in affiliation with our teaching hospital partners.

This program is approved by the Royal College of Physicians of Canada for the complete four years of training. Three institutions are involved - the Chedoke-McMaster Hospitals, Hamilton Civic Hospitals and St. Joseph's Hospital.

The first year consists of Internal Medicine. The second year comprises three months of Rheumatology, three months of Orthopedic Surgery, three months of Neurology and an elective related to neurolocomotor disability. The third and fourth year are made up of 2 month rotations in 12 different areas of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Required rotations include: 4 rotations (8 months) in general Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation; 1 rotation (2 months) in spinal cord; 1 rotation (2 months) in acquired brain injury; 1 rotation (2 months) in stroke; 1 rotation (2 months) in prosthetics and orthotics. Rotations in EMG and neuromuscular disorders, cardio-respiratory rehabilitation and pediatric rehabilitation are recommended. The integrated training includes clinical rounds and presentations, pathophysiology seminars, and regular examinations of academic knowledge and clinical skills. Research is active in many areas of neurolocomotor disability. A strong biomedical engineering resource is available.

Prerequisites:

Application Notes : Residents can be considered for training in Physical Medicne and Rehabilitation at McMaster University if they have completed at least three years of training in an approved Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. Information regarding licensure requirements are available at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario website.
Additional Admission Requirements:
    Residents who are eligible for Ontario Ministry of Health funded training positions should apply though the Canadian Residency Matching Service.
