Description:

The Cardiology Residency Program identifies two key components that provide the philosophical foundations of the program. The first is the acquisition of a core set of cognitive, procedural, and interpersonal skills that allow the trainee to develop into a competent and compassionate clinician. The second is the nurturing of a commitment to lifelong learning through exposure to clinical research and evidence-based medicine. While both are important, it is the latter that will enable the trainee to meet the future challenges of our rapidly evolving specialty. By fostering and supporting such a spirit of inquiry, the program strives to provide the trainee with the confidence to pursue any career path he or she chooses.

The mission of the cardiology residency program is to ensure that the trainee develops into a skilled and compassionate clinical cardiologist, a dedicated lifelong learner able to critically appraise and integrate information, a competent researcher equipped with the fundamental tools required to pursue a research career, if so desired.

Cardiology training at McMaster is a structured program that combines clinical work and research over three years. Integrating clinical and research activities from the beginning of cardiology training allows each activity to enhance the other. Critical appraisal skills developed during research training add significantly to thoughtful clinical care, and conversely, appreciation of clinical problems and unanswered questions on the hospital wards provide the necessary intensity of questioning that makes research a vital and rewarding activity.
