Description:

In the Ph.D. program, the degree of expertise and independence expected is much greater than in the M.Sc. program. Independent research with guidance is the main component. Knowledge of the subject area should be both broad and deep. At completion, the Ph.D. graduate should be an expert in the dissertation topic. All M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs for students with D.V.M. degrees (or equivalent) should include approximately one full year of experience in diagnostic veterinary pathology (clinical or anatomic) and this should be the first year of the program. Thereafter, diagnostic work would not necessarily form a part of the program, although a reasonable knowledge of diagnostic pathology is expected in the Comprehensive Examination for the Ph.D. Students without D.V.M. degrees should spend their first year learning general pathology and similar relevant biomedical knowledge (immunology, for example), so that they have the background necessary to undertake research in some area of pathology.
