Admission Requirements

Prerequisites:*

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.

Applicants are required to have a first-class thesis Master's degree in English, or its equivalent, with a minimum average of A- (CGPA of 3.7) in the last two years of study from a university of recognized standing. Both MA and PhD programs presuppose an acquaintance with English literature of different periods and nationalities. Applicants with other strengths but with limited historical coverage might still be accepted, but might be required to remedy deficiencies with one or even two of their graduate courses. Only in exceptional circumstances will persons holding a BA and an MA from Dalhousie be allowed to proceed to a PhD program without study at another institution.

    Test Scores:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 580] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 92] or CanTEST [min. 4.5] or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery [min. 85] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7]

English is the language of study at Dalhousie; therefore all applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate their capacity to pursue a graduate-level program in English before admission. Dalhousie accepts a number of different English proficiency test scores: Internet-based TOEFL- 92; Written TOEFL - 580; MELAB - 85; IELTS - 7; CanTest - 4.5 (with no band score lower than 4.0); or CAEL 70 with no band score lower than 60. Alternatively, a prospective student may enroll in the ESL program with the Dalhousie College of Continuing Education and obtain a grade of at least A- on the final stage of that training. The language competency test may be waived if the applicant has completed a degree at a recognized university where the language of instruction is English. The claims must be verified by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Test scores are valid for two years from the date the test was written. Applicants from abroad whose first degrees are from a non-English-language university will need a first MA in order to apply to our MA program. Applicants from abroad with an MA from a non-English-language university should apply to our MA rather than our PhD program.
