Description:

NBS’ Ballet Academic Program accommodates approximately 150 students training for careers in dance. It combines a professional ballet curriculum with academic classes from Grades 6 through 12, and represents the highest standard of professional ballet training. Students come from across Canada and abroad, and approximately two-thirds of the students live on site at NBS’ residence.

Unique to NBS, the training integrates elements from the best in progressive and acclaimed classical ballet training methods, as well as modern dance, and the latest advances in the science of movement. In addition to the daily ballet class, studies include: Variations, Repertoire, Pas de Deux, Drama and Expression, Improvisation, Historical dance/Character and anatomy. The dance program is further enhanced through the use of internationally-renowned guest teachers.

Over the years, NBS has developed a specialized and comprehensive Conditioning Program to educate students regarding their bodies and the care required to sustain the rigors of a professional dance career. Cardio classes take place in the School’s swimming pool, and conditioning sequences, based on the work of Irene Dowd, NBS’ neuro-muscular consultant, are integrated into daily ballet classes.
