Description:

Memorial is the only anglophone university in Canada to offer master's and doctoral degrees in folklore. The Department of Folklore, founded in 1968, enjoys an international reputation built on the comprehensiveness of its teaching and research programs.

Within folklore are included oral literature and traditional culture, as well as the interrelationship between oral tradition and written literature. As a consequence, the folklorist is interested in the historical development of these traditional elements and in their present-day forms and functions as found among people of all types, from all backgrounds and all regions, rural or urban. Research in the Department focuses on Newfoundland, Canadian and international cultural traditions.

Training in folklore studies offers valuable preparation for careers in a variety of cultural enterprises, particularly those involving fieldwork research techniques. Graduates of the program teach at universities and colleges throughout North America and Europe -- not only in folklore departments but also in fields such as anthropology, communications, dance ethnography, film studies, literature and women's studies. Not all have followed academic careers; graduates have also gone on to work in museums, archives, print and broadcast media, public sector folklore, and arts administration.

MUN's Dept of Folklore offers master's level (MA) and doctoral level (PhD) programs in Folklore. The MA normally requires six semesters (two years) of full-time effort. It may be done as ten courses plus a comprehensive exam or as eight courses plus a thesis. The PhD program consists of at least six courses, demonstrated reading knowledge of one other language, a comprehensive examination and a thesis.
