The Department of Linguistics was founded in 1968 and has offered graduate programs since shortly after its inception. Departmental research reflects a strong commitment to the local region. Areas of specialization include aboriginal languages of eastern Canada (Algonquian, Inuktitut), as well as local varieties of English and French and their British/European origins. Research expertise and supervision are offered in language acquisition and experimental phonetics, from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. As well, the department offers a historical/comparative component, particularly with respect to the Indo-European, Bantu, and Algonquian language families.
Languages taught within the Linguistics Department, and on which the department particularly encourages graduate research, include Algonquian (Montagnais/Naskapi, Cree, Mi'kmaq), Inuktitut, Swahili and Sanskrit. Memorial also offers a full range of courses in English, French, German, Russian and Spanish, as well as Latin and Greek. |
