Description:

The Department of History at Memorial has a well-established program of Graduate Studies with a broad range of teaching and research interests.

Research in the Department of History encompasses a wide range of areas. The department has particular strengths in Newfoundland and Labrador and Canadian history, especially in the area of labour and working-class history. The Canadian Committee on Labour History and its journal, Labour/Le Travail, have resided at Memorial since 1981.

Faculty members working in the area of maritime history are active in the Maritime Studies Research Unit and played a major role in the recent Tri-Council Eco Research project on sustainable development in a cold ocean environment.

Two maritime studies journals, the International Journal of Maritime History and The Northern Mariner, are housed in the department. Research in American history focuses on topics such as eastern seaboard land tenure, Newfoundland and Labrador/United States relations, women's history, and the maritime economy of New England.

The department also conducts research in ethnohistory and in African, American, British and European history. The review section of the Canadian Journal of African Studies is edited within the department.
