Description:

Memorial's Department of Geography, the largest in Atlantic Canada, maintains a low student-teacher ratio and a collegial atmosphere. The first graduate programs in geography were introduced in 1970; the department has since welcomed graduate students from all over the world studying in a wide range of areas. Supervision is available in the fields of biogeography, cultural/historical geography, economic geography, migration, urban geography, rural settlement, transportation, resources, regional development, glacial geomorphology, Quaternary studies, palynology, climatology, cartography, geographic information systems and remote sensing. Research facilities in support of these research areas exist within the department.

The physical and human environments of Newfoundland and Labrador present a wide range of research possibilities. The province’s easternmost coastal location in Canada provides a stimulating setting for the study of the climate and the imprint of Quaternary climate changes upon the physical landscape. The social and economic characteristics observed for Atlantic region provide a wealth of research opportunities on demographic and migration patterns, sustainable development of resources and rural development. In addition, Newfoundland and Labrador presents considerable scope for the study of coastal and marine environments.
