Description:

A specialist degree in the Sociology of Health and Illness is offered within the Master's programme. The aim of the specialisation is to provide a strong foundation in theoretical and applied health studies to prepare students for work in the health and health research areas. It is also of relevance to persons already working in these areas who would benefit from further professional development.

The programme may be taken full-time over one year or part-time over two years. Students take six modules and complete a minor dissertation of at least 15,000 words. There are 90 credits assigned to the programme. Each module counts for 10 credits and the dissertation counts for 30 credits, i.e., one third of the programme. Of the six modules which students take, three are obligatory (core modules) and the remaining three are chosen form a list of options. Each module will generally consist of 12 x 2 hour sessions.

    Applicants should normally have a primary degree in sociology or a closely cognate discipline, with at least a second class honours grade two standard or equivalent. Applicants with a joint honours primary degree should normally have attained a standard of at least second class honours grade two in their final degree.
