The MA in Comparative Literature is offered jointly by the School of Languages and Literatures and the School of English, Drama and Film at UCD. It offers postgraduate students the opportunity to study literature, cultural and literary theory and intercultural comparison in an integrated taught MA programme. The core and optional modules offered adopt a comparative perspective in order to examine processes of linguistic and social transfer across national frontiers. Designed to give students a thorough understanding of cross-cultural interaction, the programme offers core modules with a strong theoretical and interdisciplinary focus. The core modules focus on the very concept of Comparative Literature from an historical and theoretical angle; in addition, they also involve the in-depth study of a range of theoretical and critical texts that have influenced the emergence of the modern self. Special emphasis will be placed on literary theories of intercultural contact and exchange, ranging from the historical notion of “World Literature” to modern theories of Comparative Literature as well as postcolonial theories.
In addition to these theoretical and interdisciplinary core modules students will undertake the comparative analysis of European literature. The modules are designed around different genres (fiction, poetry, drama, autobiography, travel writing etc.) as well as political and philosophical texts. The minor dissertation will give students the opportunity to pursue a specialisation in a designated comparative area. This programme is the first taught comparative literature programme at UCD. Combining staff expertise in seven European languages, it promotes cultural diversity in the context of globalisation. |

Students must have at least a good Second Class Honours BA degree or its equivalent in a literary subject or a cognate area. In addition to fluency in English, students should have good reading knowledge of one of the following languages: French, German, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese. Other languages may also be considered as an acceptable entry requirement. |
