Description:Computer Engineering is the design and analysis of devices that utilize microprocessors and computers. Computer engineers design the software that controls the devices. The world has gone digital—CDs, cell phones, DVDs, telephone networks, automobile control systems, digital video recorders, digital cameras, satellite television systems, MP3 players, MRI and other medical instruments, video games, even modern washing machines—all use digital information. These designs all involve computer engineering. Computer engineers use small and inexpensive microprocessors to improve the functionality of practically any device or machine.

Skilled computer engineers are in strong demand by many sectors of industry and government. Computer engineers are flexible; their work ranges from pure software development to detailed hardware design. As professional engineers, their technical training and problem-solving skills are valued in other disciplines such as business management and intellectual property law. Students in the College of Engineering have an opportunity to obtain work experience for a period of 8, 12 or 16 months between their third and fourth years. Students are paid a salary comparable to that of a graduating engineer.
