BC Work Futures reports that “population growth, an aging population, and technological advancements in diagnosis and treatment are increasing the demand for health services,” which has led to worker shortages in the health care field. By 2008 there will be approximately 6,640 job openings for nurse aides and orderlies in B.C., with an annual growth rate of 1.8%. Of these jobs, approximately 58% will be due to retirements. BC Work Futures also states that the large size (14,000 workers) of this occupational group “offers excellent opportunity for vacancies as employees move in and out of positions.”

Following successful completion of the Long Term Care Aide Diploma program, students will be ready to provide care in a holistic way, determining clients’ personal care needs and applying the skills to meet them. Students complete a practicum and receive job search support, all of which helps them succeed in their careers. Previous graduates have secured employment at the Campbell River Association for Community Living, Comox Valley Community Health Council, We Care Home Health Services, and Future Focus Program Services.
