Description:

This course is designed to introduce students to the world of pharmaceutical analysis. Certain physical and chemical techniques used in the control of raw materials and finished dosage forms are emphasized, especially United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and British Pharmacopoeia / European Pharmacopoeia (BP/EP) methods. Students will be trained with basic and but encouraged to apply their previously acquired knowledge, especially of chemistry and mathematics, in the pharmaceutical laboratory. This program provides specific training in pharmaceutical analysis and product formulation. The practical training provides the student with `hands on' experience necessary to perform assays and determinations with the required speed, precision, and accuracy expected in the pharmaceutical industry. This course is also intended to introduce students to aspects of pharmaceutical validation. Students are introduced to regulatory requirements and guidelines for validation and validation protocols which include specifications, critical analytical parameters and processing parameters or quality attributes. The laboratory practical focus on various HPLC, UV-Vis, FT-IR & Dissolution type analyses from the USP/BP-EP and culminates with a validation project. Graduates will be employed in research and development, quality control or quality assurance areas of the pharmaceutical industries and research laboratories.
