Description:

The Autism and Behavioural Science Ontario Graduate Certificate program is a post-graduate certificate program designed for students who have a Diploma or Degree in a related area and wish to acquire a specialization in the field of Autism and Behavioural Science. Emphasis is placed on the design and implementation of effective behavioural treatment plans according to the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Intensive Behaviour Intervention (IBI).

The first diagnoses of autism were made in1943 by psychiatrist Dr. Leo Kanner of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. According to Autism Ontario it is estimated that over 70,000 individuals have some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Ontario. Recent research based on a 2002 study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that the rate of autism spectrum disorder has increased dramatically and may be as high as 1 in every 150 children. As a result, there is a need more then ever for more qualified personnel trained in Autism and Behavioural Science. Autism affects communication and social interaction. Without treatment, children with ASD may not learn to speak, interact, or function in their community.
