| The MFA (Painting) program encourages a diversity of approaches to the discipline of painting. From its inception, in 1970 the Painting Division has hosted a wide range of practices. The goal of the program has been to encourage students to explore and push the boundaries that define the practice of painting as a discipline within and against the frame of historical definition. Graduates of the Painting Division have presented final exhibitions ranging from the formally abstract to high realism as well as works that explore installation and mixed media. The major emphasis in the graduate painting program is the development of the particular student's painting concerns, both technical and conceptual. The creative work, which determines advancement from first to second year, and which finally constitutes the thesis exhibition, is self directed under the guidance of the graduate student's supervisor. |

Applicants to the MFA studio program must hold a four-year Bachelor's degree, normally a BFA degree, from a university or another recognized academic institution. Applicants who have completed university degree programs, other than the four-year BFA (for example, a four year BA), must provide evidence of work related to the student's intended area of study that is representative of a level of development equivalent to advanced study in a university program, and a transcript showing completion of senior level coursework in the History of Art and Design. Applicants require a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4 point scale (B average or 75%) in the last two years of study. |
