Description:

The Computing Science Department offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in a number of fields, including Advanced Man-Machine Interfaces, Algorithmics, Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Communication Networks, Computer Games, Computer Graphics, Computer Vision and Multimedia Communications, Database Systems, Robotics, Software Engineering, Software Systems and Statistical Machine Learning.



The Department owns and operates a network of computers, including several CPU servers and a large number of workstations. All graduate student offices are wired with high speed and/or wireless network. In addition the research laboratories contain specialized equipment. Access to campus-wide and regional computing facilities is provided by computer networks. Further information may be obtained from the Graduate Program Coordinator, Department of Computing Science. Ph.D. students are required to select a research area and a supervisor prior to arriving at UAlberta.     Ph.D. candidates are expected to have background in computing science similar to our B.Sc.Honours in Computing Science program. Normally three-year degrees do not meet the university requirements. Deficiencies must be addressed by taking appropriate undergraduate courses. There is no direct admission into the Ph.D. program from a B.Sc.

    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Computer Based) [min. 250] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 600] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 600] or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment [min. 70] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7]
    Application Notes : Applicants may also take a PTE with a minimum score of 59 in order to prove their English proficiency.
