Degree:Certificate
Field of Study:Community Organization and Advocacy
Description:Sustainable Community Development (SCD) is "a process by which communities generate their own solutions to their common economic problems, building long-term community capacity and fostering the integration of economic, social and environmental objectives." SCD goes beyond critiquing the state of the world, to developing the skills to build a practical alternative. It offers answers to globalization (such as the problem of consumer goods factories in Third World countries), and to communities under stress (like our own resource-based towns).

The Sustainable Community Development Certificate is a 19-credit program that combines theory with practice. Certificate students gain a broad knowledge base while applying concepts and practices taught by top professionals in the field. Guest speakers from all sectors of the SCD industry are integrated into all courses and course work includes grant proposal development for real projects, community case studies and in depth research reports. Group work, problem solving and communication skill development are a feature of all courses.
