The goal of the biomedical engineering PhD program is to deepen the student’s knowledge in an area of choice and integrate quantitative concepts and engineer novel tools for the study of life sciences and for patient care. As part of the PhD requirement, the student will integrate the scientific method, develop critical and deep thinking, and acquired advanced writing and presentation skills that will form the foundation for his/her future career. Under the guidance of his/her supervisor, the student will tackle a research challenge and contribute to the advancement of science and engineering and ultimately the improvement of health care. The Biomedical Engineering department prides itself on the diversity of its students – hailing from all areas of engineering and from the physical, chemical and life sciences and dentistry – that choose to pursue graduate degrees with us.

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
Applicants for the Ph.D. programme must already hold a Master's degree in a related field. (A Master's student who demonstrates outstanding potential for research may be permitted to transfer into the Ph.D. programme without completing their Master's degree. They must have completed at least one year of their Master's programme and must have an excellent academic record.) Applicants should have successfully taken a university-level course in general physiology or anatomy. If they have not taken such a course, they will have to do so in the first year of their graduate programme; since the course will be at the undergraduate level, it will not count toward the course requirements of their graduate programme.

Applicants should have Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA's) of at least 3.3 out of 4, or the equivalent.

A Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score is required from all applicants who have not completed a degree at a Canadian university. GRE percentile scores should be at least 85.
