|Description:||Microbiology is the study of organisms undetectable to the unassisted human eye; it encompasses the study of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses. Research into the life processes of microbial cells in such diverse fields as biotechnology, food safety, water pollution, soil fertility, and human and animal diseases involves many disciplines of science. Indeed, many fields of science interact with the discipline of microbiology: medicine, biochemistry, molecular biology, ecology, genetics and molecular genetics, cellular biology, and many more. For these reasons, microbiology is often considered to be an interdisciplinary science; as such, it allows each student to focus on the fields that are of the greatest personal interest.
The faculty program provides students with a useful concentration in microbiology and immunology, and allows them the flexibility to pursue a minor in another specialty or to broaden their education. The major program is designed for students who want a substantial background in microbiology and immunology, and related disciplines to prepare them for professional schools, graduate work, or entry into industry or research institutes.
