The Department of Dentistry in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta offers a four-year program leading to the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). At least two pre-professional years at university are required before admission to this program.
The DDS program is accredited through the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada. The curriculum is based on the Competencies for a Beginning Dental Practitioner in Canada (Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry, 2005). The first two years of the program includes the study of Oral Biology, Dental Anatomy, Oral Pathology, and an introduction to the pre-clinical practice of dentistry. The third and fourth years of the program are comprised of lectures, laboratories, seminars and clinical practice. In addition to clinical practice at the University of Alberta Dental Clinic, students participate in clinics at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, the University of Alberta Hospital, and in a satellite dental clinic rotation in Northern Alberta. |

The minimum requirement for admission to the DDS Program is the satisfactory completion of 60 credits of university work, of which 30 must be taken during one Fall/Winter. The preprofessional requirements to be included in the 60 are 6 credits in each of Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Physics, Biology, English, and 3 in each of Statistics and an Introductory Biochemistry.
In order to be competitive, applicants should strive for a minimum academic average of 3.5 in their transferable postsecondary studies. Students with a GPA of less than 3.0 will not be considered for admission. |
