Grade 9 Science

Science 9 (compulsory)
This activity-oriented general science course strengthens students' conceptual foundation in biology, chemistry, and physics. Units of study are Saskatchewan's environment, chemical properties and reaction, electricity and magnetism, fluids and pressure, risks, and limits. Students are offered enrichment opportunities appropriate to their academic and developmental levels. Evaluation is based on unit exams, lab reports, and enrichment projects.

Grade 10 Science

Science 10 (compulsory)
This course continues to offer students experiences in chemistry, physics, and biology. Students study matter, chemical changes, applied and consumer chemistry, water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and energy. Current issues involving science and society are explored, with students presenting viewpoints in class presentations. Evaluation is based on exams, lab reports, and class presentations.

Grade 11 Science
Prerequisite: Science 10

Biology 20
This course develops awareness of the inter-relatedness and diversity of organisms and their relationships to their environment. Concepts of an individual, a population, a community, an ecosystem, and a biome help trace the webs of life. Life patterns of each kingdom are studied. Evaluation is split between objective and subjective methods: tests, quizzes, laboratory work and write-ups, animal care, an essay or biology project, and assignments. Students will be required to do readings beyond the textbook.

Chemistry 20
This course introduces the basic concepts of chemistry, including the atomic theory of matter, the periodic table, chemical reactions (including quantitative relationships), the electrical nature of matter, and the kinetic theory of gases. Evaluation is based primarily on chapter and unit exams and on lab reports.

Physics 20
This course helps students gain an appreciation for and an understanding of the physical component of their everyday world. Topics include graphical analysis, waves, light, and sound. The goal is to gain understanding for the cause of familiar, yet puzzling, phenomena such as rainbows and echoes. Evaluation is based on labs, homework assignments, projects, and tests.

Grade 12 Science
Prerequisite: The 20 level course for the corresponding subject

Biology 30
If Biology 20 is "skin-out" biology, Biology 30 is "skin-in" biology. This course covers basic cell physiology, plant and animal physiology, reproduction, heredity, and evolution.

Chemistry 30
This course emphasizes the understanding and application of chemical concepts in a problem-solving manner. Topics include energy of reactions, rates of reactions, equilibrium of reactions, acid-based reactions, oxidation-reduction reactions, and chemical bonding. Evaluation is based primarily on chapter and unit exams, as well as lab reports.

Physics 30
Topics include kinematics, dynamics, gravity, momentum, energy, electricity, and nuclear physics. The goal is to develop or enhance effective problem solving skills within a physical science context. The quantitative approach requires a student to have sound mathematical abilities. Evaluation is based on labs, homework assignments, projects, and tests.
