Description:

Our performance program blends hands-on experience and experiential education in a collaborative environment. It also serves as a gateway to a professional life in music and as an academic pathway to further specialized research at the DMA/PhD level. Specifically, the Conducting program is designed to offer conductors advanced experience developing and increasing professional knowledge and practical skills through innovative, forward-thinking learning opportunities to create positive outcomes for students, educators and communities. Course experiences are targeted towards developing further knowledge and practical skills in conducting techniques, repertoire, rehearsal strategies and approaches, leadership and communication, student learning and engagement through lessons, small and large ensemble conducting.

    Applicants must have a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music with a minimum standing of B+. All Musicology students are required to demonstrate a good reading knowledge of German or French. Reading knowledge of an alternate foreign language may be substituted if necessary to the candidate’s intended field of specialization. The applicant’s present level of ability in this language should be indicated in the admission statement. Those who do not submit such evidence will be required to pass language examinations before work on the dissertation begins.
    Application Notes : Applicants for this program are required to submit two written examples of their work in the field of music history as well as the additional statement as described under the M.A. in Musicology, and either arrange for an audition or submit a tape as described under the admissions process for the M.Mus. in Performance.
