Description:

An MSW is a master's degree in social work. ASU's MSW online program explores a variety of social concerns that can affect individuals and families. Key focus areas include administration, behavioral health, community practice, policy practice and innovative services for children, youth and families.

The Master of Social Work online is an accredited degree program that will enable you to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA in the last 60 hours of their bachelor's program. Students who don’t meet this requirement may complete two graduate-level courses with a grade of “B” or better as a nondegree student and then apply for the Master of Social Work program the following semester.

    All applicants must submit:
  • Graduate admission application and application fee.
  • Official transcripts.
  • Statement of education and career goals.
  • Up-to-date curriculum vitae or resume.
  • Three letters of recommendation, including academic and professional references.
  • Proof of completion of 240 hours of volunteer or work experience in social services during a six-month period within the past five years. To document this volunteer or work experience, applicants may download this form, Record of Volunteer/Work Experience, and upload it with your resume and statement of education and career goals.

Along with your courses, you’ll also participate in 960 hours of mandatory hands-on field education at two different and distinct internship sites. The inability to pass a background check or fingerprint clearance can limit the opportunities available and impair your ability to secure the required internships for this program.

Graduates of ASU’s Bachelor of Arts in Community Advocacy and Social Policy program interested in the MSW program are still required to take all the classes in the MSW program and are not exempt from any of the foundation courses.
  • Additional Admission Requirements:
An applicant whose native language is not English (regardless of current residency) must provide proof of English proficiency.

Your statement of education and career goals should be three to five pages double spaced using a 12-point font and one-inch margins. The statement should address the following:

    • Your previous experiences, background or relationships that have influenced your selection of social work as your professional career. Some examples include family, education, employment, diversity experience, volunteer involvement, personal characteristics, etc.
    • Your understanding of the responsibilities of the social work profession and specifically the role and responsibilities that you wish to be able to assume as a professional social worker.
    • Your reasons for selecting the ASU School of Social Work program and your thoughts on how the mission statement addresses your career goals.
    • * We make every attempt to provide accurate information on prerequisites, programs, and tuition. However, this information is subject to change without notice and we highly recommend that you contact the school to confirm important information before applying.
