Description:

In this master?s in education with a concentration in educating multilingual learners program, you?ll learn to recognize, articulate and critique the relationship between language, culture and identity. This key skill will allow you to innovate pedagogical best practices within a classroom or learning environment. You?ll also become equipped with the knowledge necessary to collaborate with peers and educators on developing reading, writing and listening assessments. You?ll learn to create and advance strategies for language and learning advocacy while involving community and families as partners.

The successful graduate will be prepared to apply program models to support language acquisition and assess English learner proficiency.
As student demographics continue to shift, educators and administrators must become familiar with the sociocultural backgrounds of their students, including their language backgrounds. This program was designed by full-time faculty experts in bilingual/dual language education, linguistics and literacy education. The program also supports current and equity-oriented theory, pedagogy and practice surrounding teaching multilingual learners.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
    Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree, in any field, from a regionally accredited institution.

    Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of a student's first bachelor's degree program, or applicants must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.




    All applicants must submit:
  • Graduate admission application and application fee.
  • Official transcripts.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Personal statement.
  • Resume.
  • Proof of English proficiency.
  • Additional Admission Requirements:
    • An applicant whose native language is not English (regardless of current residency) must provide proof of English proficiency.
    • The letters of recommendation should be from individuals who can speak to the applicant's potential for success in a graduate program.
    • The personal statement should describe the applicant's interests and reason for seeking this degree.
    • GRE scores are not required for admission.
