Environmental: environmental engineering and science with a focus on processes in air, soil, and water; system risk assessment and public health engineering; solid waste management; environmental hydraulics; applied microbiology and parasitology; applied chemistry; mathematical modelling of environmental systems; neural network technology; industrial waste management; and disposal and fate of pollutants in the environment.

Description:

During the first term of study, students in the MSc SLP program may choose the option of completing a thesis. Students taking the thesis option will complete the same coursework as students in the course-based option, with the exception of CSD 900, the course associated with the research project. Instead of enrolling in CSD 900, students will enroll in Thesis research (THES 906). Thesis students also will take at least one credit of additional cousework in research methods and statistics. Any further coursework will be based on individual student needs and will be determined at the discretion of the supervisor and the thesis committee members. The student will propose and conduct original research that will be the basis for the thesis. FGSR regulations pertaining to master's theses, including supervisory committees and deadlines, will apply to these students.



Requirements for the thesis track of the MSc SLP include all of the academic and clinical requirements outlined above for the course-based track, with the exception of the CSD 900 research project. Students taking the thesis option typically require a minimum of 1 additional term to complete the program To be eligible for the optional thesis track, students must be in good standing and must have identified a department faculty member who is willing to supervisor their thesis research. Students are encouraged to state their desire to pursue the thesis option at the time of admission. However, they may declare this intent as late as the end of the first term of the graduate program.

    Applicants interested in Speech-Language Pathology must first apply to a 4-year undergraduate program; for example: Education, Arts, or Science. Keep in mind that applicants must also complete the prerequisite courses. It is recommended that applicants contact the Faculty of choice to make sure that they have the required high-school courses for admission.



    A minimum GPA of 3.3 (4.0 scale) is required for admission into a graduate program at the University of Alberta. However, a GPA of 3.7 (4.0 scale) is recommended for a competitive application to the MSc SLP program in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Alberta. A GPA at or above 7.5, based on the 9-point scale prior to 2003 at the University of Alberta, is recommended for a competitive application. This equates approximately to a percentage score of 90% and a letter grade of A-. Scales differ somewhat among programs and universities. The GPA used in the admissions process is calculated using the most recent 60 credits (equivalent to twenty 3-weight courses) for which grades are available at the time of application. However, GPA is not the only criterion for acceptance to the program. For more information see "Admission Process".
