| Doctoral level education is designed to provide advanced knowledge and skills to conduct independent research in public health, particularly for individuals interested in pursuing careers in academic settings, government, industry, consulting and community health agencies. The PhD specialization in public health provides the opportunity for students to obtain this high level of training in a broad range of public health fields not represented by the specialization areas. This includes fields of biostatistics, occupational and environmental health, or global health. |

The minimum admission requirements for the doctoral degrees are higher than set out as acceptable standards by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies:
- A master’s (thesis- or course-based) degree, or its academic equivalent, in a relevant field from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta, and
- A grade point average of at least 3.4 on the 4 point scale over the last 60 units of graded coursework completed.
