No matter how well you do at your studies, employers will be looking for evidence that you have gone the extra mile. The summer holidays are a great time to gain work experience and build on your employability skills. Whether you’re looking to make some extra money or you’re just in it for the experience, you will be adding to your resume. This could be anything such as; time management, problem solving, flexibility and team work. No matter what you do there will be a skill or attribute you can add to your resume. Here are a few places to look to look for summer jobs:

  • Research the web - most business no matter how small have an online presence. Whether it’s searching on local job sites or reaching out to smaller companies on social media, if you don’t look or ask, you won’t get.
  • Ask family or friends – a lot of the time it’s not what you know but who you know. Ask around family or friends to see if they know anyone who would be willing to offer you some work experience. If you’re not worried about being paid, you could volunteer or shadow someone. Even if you shadow someone for one week in the job you hope to get in the future, this will stand out to future employers.
  • Get help – there are lots of companies out there who have made it their business to help you find these opportunities. Use them! Companies such as INTERNeX can help you find valuable work experience in the area you’re interested in. You never know, this opportunity may include travel!
  • Think outside the box – You don’t necessarily have to get a job or work experience to gain valuable skills. Why not take a short course or summer school? Cardiff Met’s Summer School will give you a taste of a UK degree programme, the opportunity to travel and meet new people, and gain valuable skills.

At Cardiff Met, we know how important work experience is to our student’s future job prospects. That’s why we offer vocational courses and place a great deal of emphasis on encouraging our students to find additional work experience, volunteer work or opportunities in personal development.
