School’s out and most high school students are excited to lay back, relax and soak up the sun. However, some see this as an opportunity to spend time developing themselves professionally. Many businesses are also aware of the additional free time that students have during summer and are willing to offer temporary jobs, co-ops and internship opportunities for eager young workers. But before you apply, it’s advisable to put your best foot forward. Here’s how:

Your Resume – A resume, also known as CV, will make your first impression to a potential employer. It’s usually no more than one-page long and needs to show your work experience and academic background, but also demonstrate your work ethic and future goals. It’s crucial to ask someone to revise your CV before submitting it, since small details such as spelling mistakes can make a big difference.

Your Network – Your network is your starting point when embarking on a job hunt. Many times a job is not advertised outside of a company, as managers prefer to grow current staff or obtain references of promising new workers through trustworthy employees. It’s important to talk to everyone you know, and openly express your desire to work.

Your Look – Looking professional is a crucial aspect of landing a job. It’s imperative that as a young employee or entry level worker you make a statement of your professionalism by dressing appropriately. As a plus, this will boost your confidence when meeting your future boss.

At Middlesex University London, practical skills development is embedded in all our programmes. We have recently launched the MDXworks employment hub which includes an on-campus recruitment agency, matching Middlesex students to paid jobs and internships.
