April 10, 2006 - Once you've received your acceptance letter, going to Cambrian is one step closer to becoming a reality. But what if you weren't accepted into your program of choice? Then what?

Accepted or not ... you've still got some important steps to take before your postsecondary journey can begin.

When you receive your offer of admission from Cambrian College, it will inform you of one of the following decisions for each program you applied to at Cambrian:

FINAL ACCEPTANCE
Congratulations! We have reviewed your application and are pleased to offer you admission.

CONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE
You qualify for admission; however, one or more of the prerequisites (such as final grades, proof of OSSD, or some other specified document) have not yet been met. Your offer of admission will specify what is required.

WAIT LIST
We are unable to offer you admission at this time even though you meet the requirements. The number of qualified applicants has exceeded the number of spaces available in the program, and the program is currently full. Should a vacancy occur before classes start, we will contact you. Your name will remain on the wait list even if you accept another offer. You can view your status on the wait list through Student 411.

NOT ACCEPTED
You did not qualify for admission. You may be offered admission to an alternative program (College Exploration, Pre-Health, or Pre-Trades/Technology) even though you may not have listed it as one of the choices on your application.

As an applicant to Cambrian College, Student 411 is a great tool. This personalized, secure, Web portal provides you with access to your application information, grades, financial information, and much more! Visit www.cambrianc.on.ca and click on the Student 411 link on the left-hand menu bar.

I WASN'T ACCEPTED TO CAMBRIAN ... NOW WHAT?

You were not accepted into your program of choice at Cambrian. What do you do now?

Don't panic! Make an appointment with your secondary school guidance counsellor or a Cambrian College counsellor to discuss your options. Read over your letter carefully. You may have been offered an alternative program. Is this alternative something that may be of interest to you? Could you transfer later on into the program that was your first choice? Do you qualify for another program that still has vacancies?

You might want to find out why you were not accepted into the program. Was it your grades? Perhaps your supplemental materials (e.g. portfolio, reference letters, etc.) were incomplete or you did not provide all of the documentation required.

Maybe you want to consider retaking prerequisite courses in order to improve your grades. Speak with your secondary school guidance counsellor or a Cambrian College counsellor about your options. If you are missing prerequisite courses, you might want to consider upgrading. For more information about upgrading at Cambrian, contact Marcel Laforest by phone at (705) 566-8101 or toll-free in Ontario at 1(800) 461-7145, extension 7712 or by e-mail at mllaforest@cambrianc.on.ca

If you applied to a program that is offered by other schools, you might want to consider applying to another college or university. Many colleges advertise program vacancies on their Web sites. OCAS also provides a program vacancy service.

Finally, consider enrolling part-time at Cambrian. Numerous courses are offered in a variety of formats, including classroom learning, independent learning, Internet delivery, and distance education.
