The 2017 comprehensive rankings maintain a stable line up from last year’s showings, proving that the old “the more things change, the more they stay the same” adage rings true. There was little change in the top five from last year, with the top three schools (Simon Fraser University, the University of Waterloo and the University of Victoria) staying put, and Guelph and Carleton switching positions to round out spots four and five.
- 1. Simon Fraser University
SFU ranked second best in terms of student/faculty ratio, meaning that class sizes are smaller than average and students receive more one-on-one time with professors. SFU also placed in the top two for faculty awards, social sciences and humanities research grants and medical/science grants. With rankings like these, it’s no surprise that this west coast powerhouse took the top honours this year.
- 2. University of Waterloo
This western Ontario school’s student body considers it one of the best universities in the country –Waterloo was ranked second in student satisfaction. The university also receives a lot of research dollars, and as described by Maclean’s, the university is considered a ‘research mecca’, no doubt one of the reasons it nabbed the second spot this year.
- 3. University of Victoria
Handing out more student awards than any other comprehensive university, The University of Victoria gives out an award to six students per every thousand, on average. This university also receives a lot of medical/science grants (ranking first) and research dollars (ranking third).
- 4. University of Guelph
Guelph’s stats are impressive: collecting the most research money of any non-medical school in Canada. The university also ensures that new resources are always available to students; almost half of its library budget goes towards updating their collection.
- 5. Carleton University
Rounding out the top five is Ottawa’s Carleton University. Its students consider it one of the best schools in the country for extracurriculars, where it was ranked second in student satisfaction. Its offerings in scholarships and bursaries certainly show a dedication to Carleton students’ financial needs.
There wasn’t much movement with the remaining schools. Of note, Ryerson moved down from 9th to 11th this year. It should be noted that even with the move, Ryerson ranks 2nd in student services and 3rd in the reputational survey.
