International and Canadian Students Killed in Crash

The January 8, 2020 plane crash outside Tehran took 176 lives, including 57 Canadians.

On January 8, 2020, an airliner crashed near Tehran, killing everyone aboard, including 57 Canadians. Many more of the 176 victims called this country home; among them, migrant workers and international students.

Many of the passengers attended Canadian schools. Students from across the spectrum perished, from high school to doctoral studies, as well as Centennial College instructor Dr. Razgar Rahimi, leaving distraught family, friends and institutions to cope with this tragedy.

Students attending the University of Toronto, York University, George Brown College, the University of Guelph, McMaster University, the University of Windsor, Western University, Carleton University, the University of Waterloo, ?cole de Technologie Sup?rieure, Langara College, Dalhousie University, the University of Alberta, and Northern Secondary School were all among the victims. These schools, and others across the country, are expressing their grief over this senseless loss of life.

We were deeply shocked and saddened to hear this news. We wish peace for all those on board, and a measure of respite for their families in this difficult time.

Vigils will be held Thursday, January 9, on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, the North York Civic Centre in Toronto, and the Al Rasoul Islamic Society in Halifax.
