Four Surprise Back-to-School Tips
Weird ways to prep for the year ahead
It may still feel like summer, but school’s just around the corner. Here are five unexpected tips to make back-to-school a little more awesome.
Sleep
Easier said than done, maybe, but sleeping 7-8 hours a night, every night, will help you learn better and manage stress more easily. Still don’t think sleep is important? Experts say that each hour of sleep lost is the metabolic equivalent of eating an extra meal – so if you want to avoid the Frosh 15, start going to bed earlier. Consider wearing earplugs if you live in a noisy residence.
Treat your profs like people
Don’t be shy: profs are people too, and they’re happy to chat with students in and outside of class. Take advantage of your profs’ office hours to ask a question or raise a discussion point. At Humber, it’s easy to connect with your teachers – we keep classes small and full of discussions and interactive activities.
Walk a lot
Walking for exercise is a great idea, but walking is also a powerful way to engage your curiosity and creativity. If you’re in a new city, explore new neighbourhoods. You never know what you’re going to find – and you never know when inspiration for a great idea will strike!
Don’t think of school as a break from the real world
Too many students get to graduation without a clue about what they want to do next – and it’s too easy to let school distract you from planning for the future. If you’re not sure what you want to do, check out your school’s career centre (like the one at Humber), do some brainstorming and come up with a vision of how you want your life to look.
