Master Class: Off-roading for a Sustainable Future

For over 40 years, American society has mostly accepted Milton Friedman’s motto that the primary social responsibility of business is to pursue profits. The problem with this one-sided-view is that many times people with little voice, limited means, or no representation pay the hidden costs of production. Society at large pays in the form of environmental damage and resource scarcity. Laws and regulations lay down the guideposts for society’s expectations, but firms have a lot of leeway in determining the right course of action. For decades, they mostly chose profits over people.

This quandary fueled a prolonged philosophical debate regarding the questions: "To whom is the firm responsible?" and "What are the boundaries of this responsibility?" This Master Class will discuss how and why the answers to these questions evolved over time, why profit-motivated businesses now leverage innovation to embrace their social responsibilities, and what this means for the future of business.
