Written by Hefziba Plaza

In today's competitive job market, making a strong first impression is essential to stand out from the crowd and secure a job opportunity. From crafting an impressive resumé to acing the interview, every step contributes to your overall image as a candidate.

There's an old saying: "first impressions always last," and Humber College has the resources available to help you make those good impressions go from paper to interview.

1. Crafting an impressive resumé

Tailor your resumé: Customize your resumé to match the requirements of the specific job application. Highlight relevant skills, experiences, and achievements that align with the job description. Using similar words to the job listing can help you nail the specifics.

There are so many different types of resumés, so how do you know which one is best? Having a well-made and updated resumé is crucial to making a good impression. Humber students and graduates have access to Advising and Career Services where they can receive resumé and cover letter help.

2. Networking for opportunities

Utilize online platforms. Join professional networking platforms such as LinkedIn to expand your network and engage with professionals in your industry. Actively participate in relevant groups and discussions, share insightful content, and reach out to individuals for informational interviews or coffee chats.

At Humber, learners have access to Career Support Peer Services & Self Discovery Tools. You can have your resumé, cover letter and LinkedIn profile critiqued in person or online before submitting your application.

3. Job portals

Not sure where to apply or submit your resumé? No problem, head to CareerConnect - Job Portal. Humber learners can log in to see a list of available jobs. The portal has access to full-time, part-time, contract, summer, volunteer and on-campus positions for current Humber students and recent graduates.
