How Your MCAT Score Range Can Impact Your Program Placement at Avalon University

Are you considering pursuing medical school? It can be a difficult process preparing for and choosing the right medical school for you, but keep in mind that every school offers something different. Discover how you can choose from two separate MD programs at Avalon University School of Medicine based on your MCAT or GPA score.

What is the MCAT?

You’ve probably heard of the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) before, but what exactly is it? The MCAT is a standardized exam for students wanting to study medicine in the Caribbean, Canada, US, and Australia. This exam is designed to test your problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as well as your knowledge of natural, behavioural, and social science concepts and principles necessary in the study of medicine.

Avalon adjusts MD program to reflect MCAT scores

We here at Avalon University strive to help our students succeed through continuous innovation and development. With this in mind, we’ve adjusted our MD program to better guide students using an GPA and MCAT score range. The MD program now consists of two separate tracks where students can be placed: Accelerated MD program (5 semesters) or Regular MD program (6 semesters). The separate tracks of the program allow students to continue their medical education on a path that will set them up for success.

Avalon’s Accelerated MD program

While the MCAT is not required by Avalon University at this time, it is strongly encouraged. Through the implementation of the Accelerated MD program, students who placed in the desired MCAT score range can complete their MD degree faster than ever before!

The Accelerated MD track consists of five semesters of basic sciences courses. Students can be placed in this track of the MD program if they fall in the MCAT score range of 500 or above, and/or, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Avalon’s Regular MD program

The Regular MD program track consists of six semesters of basic sciences courses. Students can be placed in this track of the MD program if they fall in the MCAT score range of 499 or lower, and/or, have a GPA of 2.5-2.99.

Additionally, if a student has not taken the MCAT, they could be eligible for the Regular MD track based on their GPA. Students placed in this track of the program have a lighter schedule with fewer basic sciences courses per semester. This allows students to establish a better educational foundation as they continue on their journey to become a doctor.

Whether students need a bit more guidance or are able to excel on an accelerated time frame, we’ll find the best path for you at Avalon University!
