Graduate Level Funding at Thompson Rivers University

Thompson Rivers University, in Kamloops, BC, is focused on student success. Too often, though, students have trouble funding their degree. This is the case at the grad level, too: even if you're in a funded program, or work as a teaching assistant in your off time, paying for graduate school can be tough. So, TRU offers graduate awards throughout the year!

Let's take a quick look at some of the graduate scholarships available from Thompson Rivers University.

Ken Lepin Graduate Student Award

Value of award: $6,600 each

Number of awards: 8

Application deadline: August 15

If you're a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, heading into first or second year of a full-time grad program on-campus, the Ken Lepin Graduate Student Award is for you.

Eight awards of $6,600 each are open to grad students. TRU is looking for recipients with a record of academic achievement, leadership skills, and a history of active involvement in the university community. Preference is given to students from Kamloops, or other areas of BC, as well as those who attended TRU for undergrad. At least one of the eight awards will go to a student in the Master of Nursing program!

To apply, you'll need to fill out the application form (PDF), alongside a personal statement about your leadership experiences and your academic goals. You'll also need a letter of reference, a copy of your resumé, and official transcripts.

Dr. Sherman Jen Graduate Entrance Award

Value of award: $6,000 each

Number of awards: 8

Application deadline: June 1

The Dr. Sherman Jen Graduate Entrance Award is for full-time grad students in one of the following programs:

So, if you're an aspiring environmental scientist, data scientist, or teacher, be sure to check out this scholarship. Eight awards of $6,000 each are open to incoming graduate students — meaning you need to be entering your first year of your master's to qualify.

TRU is looking for applicants with leadership skills, who have demonstrated achievements in research and schoolwork.

To apply, please fill out an application form (PDF), and include a personal statement describing your leadership experiences and your goals going forward. You'll also need a letter of reference, a copy of your resumé, and an official transcript.

BC Graduate Scholarships

Value of award: $15,000 each

Number of awards: 4

Application deadline: December 1

BC Graduate Scholarships are highly competitive: four awards of $15,000 each are offered to the best and brightest students who have proven to be leaders in their fields. All programs are eligible, though recipients will be in grad programs with a strong research focus, and an emphasis on STEM (science, tech, engineering, and math).

To qualify, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, with a strong record of academic achievement. A preference is given to first-year applicants, as well as those of Indigenous heritage.

To apply, complete an application form (PDF), and include a personal statement about your research interests, along with a reference letter, a copy of your resumé, and an official transcript.

TRU MBA Entrance Award

Number of awards: up to 15 per year

Application deadline: Automatic consideration

Entering your first year of a full-time MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree? If you're also a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you could be automatically considered for a TRU MBA Entrance Award.

These awards are meant for students who show exceptional promise in the field. You'll be considered for an award based on your admission application for the MBA program.
