Taking a Non-Traditional Career Path

Creating your own roadmap for your career path can feel exciting and sometimes intimidating. As a future or current student, you have the power to navigate career opportunities that best suit your passion and skill set. Whether your path takes you two or ten years to complete, everyone's journey is different and can be tailored to fit your individual goals.

Internships

Students gain discipline-specific work experience during the middle or end of an academic program. Paid or unpaid internships are available and both can have value. Work-integrated learning is an enriching experience that gives students a competitive advantage in the job market while giving employers access to the next generation of highly skilled talent. Everyone benefits.

While students gain valuable experience that will help them launch a successful career, Humber College offers industry and community partners the benefit of new, highly skilled talent who are at the cutting edge of the latest innovative technologies and practices.

Apprenticeships

If you're a student who thrives on getting a hands-on learning experience, taking an apprenticeship program could be something of interest. The student apprentice learns a skilled trade in the workplace by doing paid work for an apprentice employer. On-the-job training is supplemented by in-class technical training.

Many apprentices are able to form solid connections with their employers, which means there is a potential path to becoming a full-time employee once the program is completed. Humber's Apprenticeship programs allow you to work in your chosen trade will also completing the academic components and in-school training required for your skill development.

Experiential learning

Students learn through task-centered activities such as simulations, which allow them to see how their actions result in specific results or outcomes. Reflection on the experience assists students in developing knowledge that will guide their future actions or behaviours. Placing a high value on hands-on learning and initiatives helps students develop employable skills and foster entrepreneurial attitudes.

For example, Humber's International Development Institute uses the creative talents and abilities of students to promote international development efforts while also providing chances for study and exposure to global issues and solutions.

Humber faculties provide a variety of work-integrated learning opportunities for students and partners to benefit from collaboration. Visit Work-Integrated Learning at Humber for more information.
