Too Old to Go Back to School? No Way! 87-Year-Old Woman Earns Master's from York University

Varatha Shanmuganathan has earned her MA in political science. Next, she's writing a book.

If you've ever thought about going back to school, and pushed the idea aside because you're "too old," well, think again. An 87-year-old woman has just received a master's degree in political science from York University, making her one of the oldest people in Canada to do so.

A lifelong ambition

Varatha Shanmuganathan received her MA this week at a virtual convocation. She wrote her research paper on the civil war in Sri Lanka, her home country — though she's lived in India, Africa, and England, too. This is in fact her second master's degree, and next, she plans to write a book.

Earning a degree in political science was a "lifelong ambition." Varatha started her degree at the age of 85, and given current COVID restrictions, had to defend her thesis virtually. At first, being back in school was a challenge, but she quickly adapted, and came to love the experience.

With four children of her own, and seven grandchildren, Varatha already had a lot on her plate. But her experience of war in her home country, and the Ethiopian civil war in the 1970s, inspired her to return to school. She hopes to contribute, in some small way, to peace around the world.

Age isn't a barrier

Clearly, age isn't a barrier for her — and neither is race or gender. The most important thing is a passion for knowledge and ideas.
