We are all in uncharted territory with the current COVID-19 situation — our lives have been turned upside down in a matter of weeks and we are having to adjust to a new 'normality,' which will likely change again in the weeks to come. We're also spending way more time at home than we are used to, and missing face-to-face interaction with our friends and family. It's easy to become unmotivated and distracted and to put life 'on hold,' Here are some tips for staying positive, and being proactive.

Set a schedule

It's so tempting to sleep in late, hang out in PJs all day and not get anything done. Are you (or should you be) studying? Do you have online classes, assignments to get on with? Set a study schedule and try to stick to it. Allocate certain hours in the day to focus on course work, and then schedule time for relaxation so that you have a balance.

Stay connected and engage

It's important to stay connected with your school, friends and family during these difficult times. Opt for video chats to make interactions more personal — and get a few friends on a group call. Embrace the technology — there are so many great ways to connect — Zoom, House Party, Whatsapp, and Facebook, to name a few. Opt for virtual happy hours, coffee dates, virtual dinners. Stay connected with teachers, counselors and lecturers.

Go outside

Rain or shine, get out every day for some fresh air and exercise. It's great for your mental health and, of course, for your body. Studies show that fresh air increases your energy level, raises your immune system (very important!) and generally makes you happier. Schedule a time every day to go outside for a walk, run or bike ride.

Learn something new

Do you have time on your hands? Turn off the TV and learn something new. Always wanted to learn a language? Try out one of the online language learning programs. Learn how to bake a cake or make cocktails. Try your hand at writing — start a blog or a journal? How about painting? Join or start a virtual book club?

Start planning your next step in education or to travel

We know that now is not the best time to get on a plane or study abroad, which is tough on those of us who love to explore. However there's nothing to stop you from dreaming and planning for when the time is right. Start a bucket list of places you want to travel to. Watch travel programs to get some ideas. Have you considered studying abroad either short-term or long-term? Check out the free Virtual Education Fair on May 21st. Meet with universities from around the world from your couch.

Be kind to yourself!

It's normal to feel anxious and overwhelmed. Talk to other people about your feelings — the odds are on, your friends are feeling the same way. Don't put unrealistic expectations on yourself. Try to switch off from all the negative news out there, and focus on the positives. What are you grateful for? Every day try to think of one thing for which you are grateful.

The COVID-19 will pass — we don't know when, but it will. In the meantime, stay positive and stay connected. Don't put your future on hold — make plans for when the time is right. We're in this together!
