With the end of the year school year fast approaching, start preparing now to make the most of your time off. A summer job will help you gain marketable skills, clarify your interests, earn you some money, and look great on your evolving resume.

Not sure where to begin? Step one is to create or update your resume. If you’ve never written a resume before, there are plenty of online resources that will guide you through this process. If you already have one, make sure it’s up to date. If you apply to a specific job, tailor your resume to highlight relevant skills and experiences related directly to the job requirements.

Step two is to determine the types of jobs you are interested in and qualified for. Fill out Your Lifeline form to help you with this process of self-discovery. Once you have your interests narrowed down, it’s time to start job hunting!

Most job opportunities are posted online, but use step three to your advantage and talk to friends, family, and neighbours to learn of any other summer job opportunities. In addition to applying to jobs online, head out to local businesses in your area with resumes in hand and apply in person. Sometimes all it takes is that face-to-face connection to land an awesome summer job!

Hopefully your efforts result in an interview. Step four is your time to shine, so make sure you’re prepared! Research the organization and review some sample interview questions. Most importantly, show your enthusiasm and personality!

Best of luck on your summer job hunt!
