Don’t forget to pack a few of your own home comforts.

If you are heading to school in the UK next semester there are a few things you may want to consider:

  1. 1. Visa requirements

Do you need a visa? How do you get one? Check the requirements with your new university.

  2. 2. Pack wisely

British weather is a great talking point, because it’s so changeable. Prepare for cold, wet and sometimes sunny weather - it can change in a day!

Research how easy it is to find your special brand of tea/ coffee/ chocolate and, if necessary, take a little stash with you, to stave off pangs of homesickness and share with new friends.

Don’t over pack! The UK is well equipped with all sorts of shops to suit all budgets and needs. Leave room to buy mementos.

  3. 3. Arrange accommodation before you land

Universities offer a lot of pre-arrival information and support to help you find accommodation that’s right for you.

  4. 4. Healthcare

Make sure you have comprehensive travel cover. Take digital and hard copies of your passport, visas, destination address and contacts, etc., in case of any eventuality.

  5. 5. Keep your routines

If you like swimming, for example, scope out the university and local area facilities ahead of arrival.

  6. 6. Reach out to other international students

You could use the University’s International Facebook Page to reach out to other students and even set up a group chat.

  7. 7. Prepare for a little culture shock / homesickness

Even English speaking countries can be very different. Make sure you have contact details for your friends and family. You may want to set up a blog to keep in touch with everyone.

  8. 8. Have fun! Adopt a positive attitude.

Happy people attract happy people. You will make friends. You will have a great time. Remember everyone is just as nervous.
