Want to earn a few extra bucks over the summer to help pay for school? Keep these tips in mind when you're searching for the right job:

  1. 1) Clean-up your online presence

Do you have questionable photos on Instagram? Did you have a Twitter account during your pre-teen angst years that you forgot to delete? Employers can and will find these. Search for yourself on Google or try using Pipl.com.

  2. 2) Look outside your comfort zone

Your hometown might seem like the best place to find a summer job - you can stay with your folks rent-free and see all your high school friends - but have you considered travelling to another city, province, or country? There are lots of opportunities and resources to find seasonal work abroad, and it's a great excuse to travel.

  3. 3) Start your own business

Having trouble finding a summer job that interests you? Start your own business instead! The Ontario Government provides grants to students through the Summer Company program.

  4. 4) Don't be afraid to ask

Did you know only about 20% of job openings are advertised? That leaves 80% of jobs in the hidden market! How do you get those jobs? It's all about who you know. Talk to your friends, family, dentist, neighbours, teachers, people you meet in the grocery store... you get the point. And if there's a place you've always wanted to work, but you don't know if they're hiring summer students, just ask!
