Attending University is an exciting time in your life, but it can also be fairly challenging especially when you’re juggling your course load, social life and being away from home for the first time. At RGU we have an excellent student counselling and wellbeing centre where students can meet with counsellors to talk over issues that might be concerning them including how to manage stress. Stress can be common among students, so we would encourage students to seek the support that they need.

Research shows that, although in certain situations, stress can bring out your best, too much of it can have a negative impact on your performance, affecting not just your emotional and mental health but also your physical health. Symptoms of stress include headaches, back pain, stomach and bowel problems, restless sleep, no energy, lack of concentration and an increase in coughs and colds.

Ignoring stress will not make it go away. But there are lots of things you can do to help alleviate your stress or anxiety.

  • Have a balanced diet with lots of fruit and veg. Ease off on junk food and caffeine
  • Try to get at least eight hours sleep a night
  • Unwind before sleeping, e.g. no television, surfing or studying for at least half an hour before going to bed
  • No cramming all night
  • Devise a revision schedule
  • Talk about your worries, or try writing them down in a Worry Book
  • Keep active. Exercise can boost your energy, clear your mind and relieve stress. Try to spend at least 45 minutes a day doing something like walking, dancing, swimming, running or working-out in the gym – RGU has a state of the art gym and Olympic sized swimming pool on campus.
  • Make room for the occasional treat in your revision schedule so that you always have something to look forward to
  • Improving your study skills will help you to feel more in control of your work. That in turn helps boost your confidence
  • Try Mindfulness, a form of meditation;
