The University of Sussex is a leading higher education and research institution near Brighton, in the south of England, formed in 1961. Sussex is ranked number one in the world for Development Studies (QS World Rankings 2023) and is a top-25 UK university (THE World Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) 2023). Sussex is also ranked Top 100 worldwide for Social Sciences as well as being recognised in our global outlook (THE World University Rankings by Subject 2032). Sussex is a leading research university, as reflected in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF). For REF 2021, 89% of the research we submitted was categorised 'world-leading’ (40.6%) or 'internationally excellent’ (48.4%).

Creative thinking, pedagogic diversity, intellectual challenge and interdisciplinarity have always been fundamental to a Sussex education. If you apply for an undergraduate course which starts in September 2024, you are guaranteed University-managed accommodation if you: are a full-time, first-year undergraduate student applying through UCAS for September 2023, choose Sussex as your first choice and firmly accept our offer apply for accommodation by 30 June 2024. If you apply for a Masters which starts in September 2024, you are guaranteed University-managed accommodation if you: are a full-time Masters student from outside the UK and apply for accommodation by 1 August 2024. You will be sent a housing offer once you have paid your Masters tuition fee deposit for international students.

Incoming Students

If you are an international student, our International Student Support team offer a dedicated advisory service to help you settle into UK life, as well as a programme of trips and social events to help you feel at home in Brighton. This includes guidance on the different types of visa and their conditions in relation to working in the UK.We can offer immigration and visa advice. Our International Student Advisers can answer your immigration questions and guide you through the visa application process. We also offer general support and advice on living in the UK. This includes: a meet and greet service at Heathrow and Gatwick airports during arrivals weekend in September; a coach service from Heathrow airport to campus which you can book in advance; events for international students as part of the University's induction programme; social events and day trips to places in the UK; international students information sessions.

Career Planning

We support you to prepare for your future career. We offer careers guidance to help you to explore your career options, build your skills, and gain the experience employers look for. To help you meet employers, you can attend a range of events including our annual careers fair, as well as our careers and skills workshops. Preparing you to make successful job applications is one of our areas of expertise. You can attend regular workshops that cover all aspects of finding work, including our placement preparation programme. We work with local, national, and international employers and we advertise over 5,000 vacancies each year. You can view and apply to a range of roles through our online jobs portal including: placements; internships; work experience; volunteering; part-time jobs to fit around your studies; graduate jobs and graduate schemes; further study and training opportunities.

Sports

Sussexsport facilities are all located on campus at two sites; the Sport Centre and the Falmer Sports Complex. To use the facilities, gold, silver and bronze memberships are offered, all of which come with the ability to make online bookings. Alternatively, you can pay and play. We also offer coaching in tennis, squash and badminton along with an extensive drop-in group exercise and courses programme including yoga, dance, pilates, trapeze, circuit training and aerobics.

Clubs

Special Services

The Student Support Unit (SSU) offers a confidential service to prospective and registered students who either have a disability or diagnosed long term health condition that will affect their studies. There are two Disability Advisors and information is only shared with the student's written consent. All students with a disability or long term health condition who register at the SSU will be allocated to one of the Disability Advisors. Support is available for students who have a long term disability including students with sensory and mobility impairments, long term health conditions, eg. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME, Epilepsy, Crohn’s disease etc.
