Description: The Educational Assistant Diploma program (school-age learning and assistance major) enables the student to enhance their skills in children’s programming and to focus on the school-age educational programs. Instruction includes course work that provide the student with in-depth knowledge and skills related to child development and the preparation and delivery of developmentally appropriate experiences for individual or small groups of children in the school environment from ECS to Grade 12. This program provides the students with skills needed to work competently and effectively with students who have varied special needs and abilities. The Educational Assistant Diploma program (early learning and child care major) enhances the student’s skills to work effectively with young children, families and agencies in various early childhood environments.

The diploma program also prepares the student to work in a supervisory position in preschool programs. Diploma holders working in preschool programs are eligible to obtain a Level 3 qualification from Children’s Services. There are 24 weeks of classroom instruction and 12 weeks of practicum experience at an assigned program site. Students may be required to travel to practicum sites located at a distance. Students are responsible for transportation, accommodations and other personal responsibilities during practicums. Practicum agencies, either for statutory reasons (i.e.-Protection for Persons in Care Act) or for policy reasons, may require a Criminal Record check. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain, at the student’s expense, the necessary checks and submit them to the Program Coordinator and/or practicum agency prior to practicum.
