A study poem about the Norman invasion of England
By Rob Taylor
In the year 1066 King Harold of England was struck dead,
For at the Battle of Hastings an arrow hit his head,
In truth the bolt hit his eye or so they say,
About this there is debate even today,
The new king who took England by force soon after,
Was William the Conqueror – England's new master,
He built many castles and forts and among them,
Was the great and still standing Tower of London,
These were built to help maintain his power,
Those who oppose the king end up as a guest of the Tower,
Although some of them end up being exiled or worst,
Being prime candidates for a ride in a hearse,
Some people often wonder and even demand,
Why William a Norman would invade an Anglo Saxon land,
William claimed that the king before Harold had said that he should be heir,
About this King Harold did not really care,
As far as he was concerned Edward the Confessor had named Harold king,
That and a distant relation between Edward and William started the whole thing,
Still there are many who said that the battle Harold might have won,
If he had not come to face William after so soon being on the run,
For there was yet another king who wanted the throne of England to come his way,
And that was a fellow by the name of Harald Hardrada the King of Norway,
Harold not only had to fend off the northern invasion of warriors Viking,
But immediately after he rapidly had to come south to battle by quickly hiking,
All this battle probably made the common English people want to hide in trench,
And to top it all off William the Conqueror did not speak English but rather French!
