Part Two: More great hacks for applying to university

Save

Last November, CMU published a pep-talk article giving you all the tips, tricks and gumption you need to write a great university application. The response was so good, we’re doing it again.

This time around, we’re offering you the ins and outs of how to construct the add-ons that accompany your application form. Just like last year, it all comes down to the same core principles: be confident, be thorough, and be yourself.

  1. The Essay
Essays and portfolios are like auditions: the university wants to see what you can do, and get to know you better. So take them up on their offer to listen! Use all the space they give you to show them your brilliant ideas, critical thought process and solid argumentation skills. Be succinct, incisive, and authentic. Remember to respect the word count and PROOFREAD: twice yourself—silently first, out-loud the second time—then get somebody else to look at it, then once more yourself.

  2. The Portfolio
Portfolios allow you to showcase several examples of your best work, so play up your versatility. If your application form specifies what kind of samples the university is looking for, follow the requirements to a tee. In general for visual arts, vary your angles, media, subject matter, styling, colour palette, etc. In creative writing, vary the genre, length, subject matter and—if appropriate—type of narrator. Choose pieces in which your distinct voice and style are strong and controlled.

  3. The Interview
Every university’s interview process is different, so do your homework and read up on what to expect from your particular school. Our advice is simple: be passionate, confident and focussed. Listen well. Above all, be honest: you don’t have to appear perfect, only eager and capable; so don’t be afraid to ask questions back!
